Copyright Notice

With the way of the world right now and everybody seemingly scraping content for anything, I thought it wise to clarify a few things regarding the rights for stuff on this website.

I hold the copyright for just about everything on this website. I say "just about everything" because there are a few important nuances and exceptions.

First, co-authors also hold copyright on some essays, blog posts, and presentations. The co-authors with whom I've had the privilege to collaborate are clearly indicated on the things to which they contributed.

Next, some essays and blog posts were first published in journals, conference proceedings, or books. In some of these cases, I've given copyright to the publisher. All the publishers I've worked with have some kind of fair use clause for authors. For example, IEEE Software allows authors to share a pre-print version of articles on the author's personal website. Since the copyright is owned by other organizations, it's up to them whether those works can be reproduced or used for other purposes such as training large language models or distributing copies for use in the classroom. Most of the publishers provide guidance on these topics on their websites.

Finally, some content on this website is intended to be copied and reused. This includes things like templates, workshop activities, and some presentations. I will indicate clearly when this is the case. You are free to copy, use, and even remix this content, for fun or profit, with proper attribution.

If you found something particularly useful and would like to translate it into another language, I'm totally open to this. Please ask permission beforehand. If I'm the rights holder, I'll nearly always grant permission in exchange for a link to your translation, or a copy of it to host here (with attribution, of course).

This is the web! Instead of copying things I've written and shared, it's much better to share links.
