About

I'm Michael Keeling. I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with my family. I've been a professional software engineer since the early 2000s, but my history with computers goes back to the 80s. Currently, I work at Kiavi as a Senior Staff Software Engineer. I'm also the author of Design It!: From Programmer to Software Architect. I have a Master's in Software Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a BS in Computer Science from the College of William and Mary.

Background

After graduating from the College of William and Mary, I cut my teeth as a software engineer doing systems analysis for the DoD. While working for Black Knight Technology, I built a suite of data analysis tools, designed and executed system tests, and worked on, what I assume, was one of the largest model-driven architecture (MDA) projects in the world at the time.

I left Black Knight to pursue a Master’s in Software Engineering at CMU.

After CMU, I tried my hand at web application development. Over the course of a year or so, I worked on a web-based, digital medical records system and built a couple web apps for a marketing firm. jQuery was all the rage.

In 2011 I joined Vivisimo. I specialized on customer projects with unique challenges, including OEM integrations, and developed enterprise search solutions for large US telcoms, international banking firms, research organizations, medical device manufacturers, and a European-based aeronautics company, among others.

Vivisimo was acquired by IBM in 2012. I started my career at IBM in Global Business Services (GBS) as a consultant. I transferred to the Software Group a year later, just in time for our division to be “reacquired” by the newly formed Watson group. As a part of Watson, I was tech lead for the Watson Information Retrieval Enhanced (WIRE) team. The WIRE team collaborated closely with IBM Research labs to transfer emerging technology to software products running on IBM’s new cloud platform.

I wrote Design It! after hours and on the weekends while I was at IBM, but the research started while I was a student at CMU. It took about 7 years to go from idea to a published book.

In 2018, I joined Kiavi (then LendingHome). At Kiavi, I've developed new software products, designed and developed automated decisioning systems, and built a service-oriented architecture practice from scratch. As a Senior Staff Software Engineer I work across the whole engineering org, sort of like a tech lead for the department.
